Excellent pic. Excellent Graham Greene.

The Curse of the Cat People (philip)

If Tourneur had directed 'Curse' it would have been a different pic... I bet...

The Curse of the Cat People (philip)

You forget that "Cat People" was dir x Jacques Tourneur, who dir the brill noir "Out of the Past." Robt Wise was a hack. I know nada about Fritsch.

Potiche (kkowalcz)

"Angel" - suggested by the life of novelist Marie Corelli - is lousy, too.

Oscar Predictions and Commentary 2011 (2010 Films) (Pippin2010)

Pip -- Congrats on your correct calls Re Oscars. Those awards are horrendously predictable. I like to think there'll be a fabulous surprise -- for the good, and there never is.

Academy Awards Best Picture 2011 (cliodhna)

Does anyone here remember "The Miracle Worker" ? The 2 stars - Bancroft, Duke - won awards. But neither the pic nor dir (A Penn) was nominated. It was about a woman teaching a kid how to say Wa-Waaah-Water!! It was far, far superior to this rubbishy schmaltz tagged "King's Stutter." It's an embarrassment to find it nominated as Best. Best Kaka.

Oscar Predictions and Commentary 2011 (2010 Films) (Pippin2010)

1-week away: Editors guild cited 'Social.' Key group. Holly chums say it's Fincher - best director; v tight race for best pic. Harve the Whine in LA, opening every supermarket ...I really hated 'Stutter.' It's so fuken old-fashioned-tvee-HBO. But schmaltz is what 'those people' like --.

Will the "FB Revolt" in Egypt help Social?

Sophia Coppola's "Somewhere"

For many cinemaddicts "Somewhere" belongs among the top 5 films of the year. It's an intelligent, sensitive European art house-styled look at the banality of life in Hollywood. With little dialogue and long, steadfast shots, "Somewhere" is cousin to the ennui films of Antonioni ("L'Avventura," "La Notte"). A likeable performance by Stephen Dorff as a Famous Actor and a knockout turn by Elle Fanning as the daughter he bonds with.
